Project: Public Safety Transportation Ops Center Location: Faifax, VA Client: HOK Date: 1/1/2007 12:00:00 AM Description: Polysonics has been working with HOK to provide Fairfax County Virginia with Design Consulting, Bid Documentation, and Construction Administration services for their new Public Safety Transportation Operations Center (PSTOC). PSTOC will be one of the most technologically advanced and highly capable facilities of its kind in the nation. It will be the first embassy grade building of this type on the East Coast.
Opening in the fall of 2008, PSTOC is a 120,000 square foot complex, which will house the Communications Center of the Virginia State Police, Virginia’s Department of Transportation Smart Traffic and Monitoring Center, as well as Fairfax County’s Public Safety 9-1-1 Communication Center and Emergency Management Center. An additional 18,000 square foot annex attached to the PSTOC will house the County’s Police Forensics operations. PSTOC will have over 30 rooms of varying sizes and functions requiring state of the art audio, video, and related control systems.
Many of these areas are mission critical to serving the county’s public safety as well as the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) traffic management system for Northern Virginia. The Polysonics designed systems include six video walls (the largest is a 2 x 5 configuration with 80 inch cubes), numerous flat screen video displays, streaming video with provisions for up to three hundred traffic cameras from across the entire Northern Virginia area, video conferencing, video projection, foreground and background audio, localized sound reinforcement, press connectivity, in house cable TV system, sophisticated control systems and user interfaces, networked audio and video components over a separate A/V network with a 10Gb fiber optic backbone, as well as thirty fully integrated conference rooms.

Bid Documents Notes: Lessons Learned:
Our coordination with the numerous county stakeholders to identify operation requirements, technology needs and deployment timelines was time and energy well spent.
From the beginning we realized the value in keeping the many diverse groups in sync and up to speed on project designs and developments. With each stage of the design process we kept each group informed of all new developments and also received approval at each major milestone.
We also learned that at times it can be very challenging to receive timely review and approval from all of the various organizations involved.
Meeting with the manufacturers of key technology we were considering for the project was also wise. We were able to verify the latest state of the art and identify the best “tools for the job”.
